      Newbie question, what are all those wires connected to the carboy for?

      A newbie here as well (one year brewing).
      That is a temperature probe with one end attached under a small sponge, and taped to a plastic carboy. Not shown is a Johnson Controls A419 temperature controller that is controlling a fermentation heater wrap that is also taped to the carboy. I over tape everything to be on the safe side. This has been working really good for me in keeping conditions just right and has enabled me to brew six delicious batches since January.
