A beer engine or hand pump is used to serve cask conditioned ale (sometimes referred to as real ale) without the use of force carbonation. Beer engines use the basic principle that liquids do not compress when placed under pressure; therefore, if you apply pressure to the liquid it will move rather than compress. Beer engines enjoy wide-spread in the UK.
