Mead at its simplest is made from water, honey, and yeast. Mead making can be as simple as mixing the three together, but you can also take extra steps with each ingredient to ensure the best possible fermentation.

Other elements of water chemistry is less of a concern in mead making than it is in the beer brewing process, because the mash is not a concern. However, just as in extract beer brewing, water composition will have some effect on the flavor of your finished mead, especially if the water has an extremely hard or soft character.
