Oktoberfest, also known as Wiesn after the festival grounds where it is traditionally held, is the largest public party in the world, in which beer plays a central role.

[edit] History of Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest had its start with the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in October of 1810, which was accompanied by an enormous public festival. The festival was so popular, it was repeated the following year, and gradually developed into the Oktoberfest we know today.
