Default HB Enhancement

Hello all,

I am new to HBrewing and and trying to find info on the advantages of using grain/hop in HB. Can this be done with Tin + fermentable or should you only use grain if it is going to be an all grain brew?

Most canned kits are pre-hopped and have the correct grains for the style. No reason you can't add some flavor and aroma hops to the boil.

What you are thinking about is called extract with specialty grains. This involves unhopped extract, generally light in color, and a small amount of grain that is steeped before the boil. Hops are added for bittering, flavor and aroma. many companies sell kits with all of the required ingredients.

+1 for kits that provide grains, hops and UN-hopped extract....if it's a money issue, you really aren't saving much money by purchasing a prehopped "kit" after you buy the rest of the DME and sugars you need, nevermind that the yeast is usually crappy...
...and if it's a difficulty issue, steeping grains is as easy as making tea and adding hops is just throwing them in the pot....not too difficult and your beer will be much much better for it....

This is a great multipart article on improving kit beer's like coopers.

Improving Your Kit

It's from the Craftbrewer Radio site...the article is a companion to.

The guys get “Down and Dirty” for the Kit and Kilo brewer with the simplist yet method of making a kit beer that tastes great. They also taste the underpitched beer experiment, and follow up on a brewers problem with under-atttenuation. Our beer superhero tries to save the love of his life - and Wonder-Mole, while we look into a beer belly experiment. More on how to say beer words, drink driving, beer laws and a quiz question will fill out the program, with a typical Aussie beer tale sung at the end.
