I've used challenger with success in English ESB's and Barley Wines.
This is the ORIGINAL Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. Nature's choicest products provide its prized flavor. Only the finest of hops and grains are used. Selected as America's Best in 1893.

There's a great recipe for Coniston Bluebird that's just two-row, a handful of crystal, and just Challenger hops. I made it with S-04 and it was terrific - maybe the most popular beer I've made. It's from either Clone Brews or Beer Captured, but I found the recipe via Google.
Bottle conditioning: Pliny the Elder clone; Tramp's Overcoat Barley Wine
Next up: Vanilla Porter
