Nah, I fermented in plastic fermenters (buckets), loosely covered to protect beer from flys, spiders etc. There is enough CO2 to serve as protection blanket.
But now I starded doing extended primary, and I use airlock now - after a few days fermentation looses vigor, and I want to be able to shake fermenter from time to time, not causing oxidation.
