Is this stuff just cane sugar, or something more? I got a box of it and it purports to add "a distinctive flavor". Sounds mysterious. Anybody used it as an additive?

It's definitely more expensive.
Unless you add very large amounts, you won't notice any difference in flavor or color when compared with granulated sugar.
If you want a distinctive flavor from adding colored sugars, then try adding molasses
