Default extract full boil, what are the differences?

Do I need to change anything (ingredients) to do a full boil for an extract beer?

I have an octoberfest in the fridge, starting the lagaring process, and did a full boil. The OG was WAY higher than anticipated.

I want to brew a christmas ale this week, and like using the full boil with a immersion chiller.

Your hop utilization will be more efficient, so you may need to recalculate that but it won't be a huge difference. Other than that you shouldn't need to change anything else.

On the contrary, it can be a very significant difference. Going from a 2 gallon partial boil to a full boil will typically DOUBLE your IBU's, which is not insignificant! The first few batches where I did a very large (~4 gal) or full boil, using ingredient kits and not adjusting the hops, did not come out very good because of the unexpectedly high bitterness - it's definitely not a wise thing to ignore.

So how should one adjust for this difference?

I just did two full boil's with kits and tasted one last night to see how it was progressing.

It tasted awesome and wasn't too hoppy...

Not sure how much of a difference it makes if the recipe/kit is giving you enough for a partial boil..

To me a full boil with an amount designated for partial, would "water" down the hopp taste/smell since there is more water.

But i'm no expert, sadly.

is there a brewmaster course I can take anywhere?
