When I first got all of my equipment (or so I thought I had), I calculated what it would take to pay back the investment since I would now 'save money' by brewing A/G. I figure if I brew 100 gallons a year for the next 30 years, I will have made my money back and start saving!
I must admit, I have a few expensive toys which may not be 'neccessary' and I keep adding to it.
I am getting ready to alter my existing kegerator (set up for a single sanke) over to a three corny system and I have a shopping list in front of me which adds up to over $900 (don't ask!).

All of my hobbies have cost me far more than brewing does. I don't mind spending a bit extra per beer; I enjoy my beer more, drink less of it and have a great time when I brew. win win win.

You don't have nowhere half as much equipment as I do, and I'm certain others can double mine, but what we do have is a serious case of GAS - (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)!!!

It's a place where people who don't order their beer fixins over the internet get their stuff. It's usually local, and has people who know you by name. Sometimes, they even know what gear you don't have and try to sell it to you, even though you only came in for a few things. The LHBS is great !

i have twenty bucks cash set aside each week to buy brewing stuff... some weeks i have to skip a week of brewing if i want to make a high gravity batch, or buy a new piece of equipment.

luckily i'm pretty much just buying hops and grain and yeast now... i've alton browned alot of stuff from the old kitchen during our recent move, and can still dupe my little brother into buying stuff for our brews or chipping in more than his share on ingredients...

reuse yeast alot, and will begin saving some from the first yeast cake before a second batch gets racked atop it.
