thanks, it seems like a lot of things is my brewery are coming all together this season....I finally have kegs in hand, and just now need to think up a stand design.

SWMBO thinks I should make the garden bigger.....for more hops and more veggies....she loves 'em both.

I'd read that 4 feet on either side of the plant was necessary. Any less and they start to crowd each other, making it difficult to determine which cone came from which plant and they choke out their sunlight. I've been planning my garden based on that and my area is massive compared to yours. Maybe I'm overdoing it? My area will be about 30' x 30'.

well, the one lazy aspect of this whole thing is I didn't measure everything out. If I need more room, I'll just bust out the tiller and make more room, it's that easy.

If you do, remember that where you had the fire, you inadvertently sterilized the top soil and nothing will grow there. You will want to dig down about 6 inches and remove the dead dirt and replace it with live top soil.

I just mixed some of the ash into the top soil as I tilled it.....I didn't do a 'slash and burn' so to speak

That's fine, but it was the heat from the fire that killed all the microbes in the top soil in the small area where the fire was. The heat will penetrate 6 to 8 inches into the soil and that's what sterilized the soil. Plants will have a tough time growing in that 4-6 ft diameter area (depending on how big the fire was).

yep, I know. I didn't mention anything till you talked about expanding the garden. You just want to be aware of that area should you decide to include it when you expand it.

ahh, ok...I wasn't going to expand it that way even if I did make it bigger, so seems like it would all just work out anyway, but thanks for the tip, I didn't know that.

I do plan on adding the 'fire pit' feature a little bit away from where it is now....I feel like we are going to spend a lot of time back there this summer!
