Because it has tri clover fittings on it. Get a valve that is designed to be welded.

I would actually like to hear one good reason why you WOULD do this?

Because I want an ultra compact profile on my fermenter. I would like to fit it in my existing fridge. Adding a ferrule to the fermenter would add on at least an inch.

As long as they can be cleaned in place I don't see the problem. Am I missing something obvious?

Edit - I mash/boil/ferment all in one vessel. I have 2 30 litre, stainless fustis.

Edit2 - My buddy is a stainless welder, so cost is minimal.
