Recipe Type: Extract   
Yeast: Wyeast 1056   
Yeast Starter: Smack Pack   
Additional Yeast or Yeast Starter: No   
Batch Size (Gallons): 5.0   
Original Gravity: 1.049   
Final Gravity: 1.011   
IBU: 31   
Boiling Time (Minutes): 60   
Color: 13.60   
Primary Fermentation (# of Days & Temp): 14 @ 70F   

Ingredients:
6.51# Alexander's Light Extract (LME)
1# Caramel Malt (60L) Steeping Grains
2oz. Whole Cascade Hops (6.1% Alpha)
1/3 tsp Irish Moss
Wyeast 1056 Smack Pack

Brewing Schedule:
Note: Volumes are intended for use in a full boil.
1# Caramel Malt - Steep at 155F for 30 minutes in 1.5gal water
Main Boil Kettle: Boil 4.5gal of water
6.51# LME - boil for 60 minutes
Add 1.5g water from steeping grains to main kettle (for a total of 6.0 gallons)
1oz Hops - in boil for 60 minutes (bittering)
Irish Moss - 1/3 tsp in boil for 50 minuntes
1/2 oz Hops - boil for 30 minutes (flavoring)
1/2 oz Hops - boil for 2 minutes (aroma)

Congrats on the first brew... Recipe looks tasty. A few more late addition hops probably wouldn't hurt... move the 30 to 20? and maybe 1/2oz. at 5... should definitely work the way it is, but more aroma would be enjoyable in a pale!

You know what? You're completely right about more late addition hops. I've noticed that as this ale bottle conditions the hop aroma is fading. At just 3 days in the bottle, there was very little carbonation and a really good hop nose on it. However, at this point (2 wks in bottle) the hop aroma and flavor is a bit weak. The IBU seems about right, but I think I'll change the hop schedule to something like this:

1oz (60m)
1oz (20m)
.5oz (5m)

In addition, I may add some Willamette or Chinook hops in there to give it a bit more character. I have to say, though, for my first beer it's damn tasty as it is! Thanks for the tip!
