i've just gotten back to brewing the last few months since moving to stl a couple years ago. i wanted to check if anyone in that area did any kinda water treatment for better brews. i was recently reading that ideal mash ph is 5.3-ish. i recently read a water report that had the ph around 9-ish. don't know much about water chem/ph so wasn't sure if the ph would lower when mashing. the beers i've made so far have been pretty tasty but always looking for ways to make them tastier.

thanks in advance.

Go to http://www.stlwater.com/ccr.pdf and enter the numbers given there into a water calculator like at http://www.brewersfriend.com/mash-chemistry-and-brewing-water-calculator/. Add in any mineral additions you plan to add to the mash and enter your grist (grain bill) and it will tell you what your predicted mash ph will be. It works pretty well. I use it every batch and it's yet to fail me.
Head over to the brew science forum on here and read up on brewing water basics. Great intro into adjusting your water profile to fit the beer you're brewing.

I've seen this report and am interested in tinkering with water profiles. Won't your number be off since they are just averages? I'm afraid to mess with it since I'm not certain about MY water. But you said you haven't had any issues? may give this a try. Have you used https://sites.google.com/site/brunwater/ ?
