Default I'm Glad I Was A Nerd

...ok I still am.

I was listening to a podcast with Chris White of White Labs and he mentioned that you can see yeast under a microscope at 400x power. That got me thinking. Where is that microscope kit I got when I was a kid? I found it in the rafters of the garage. It's a Tasco kit with a microscope that is adjustable from about 60x to 1200x with three lenses, a mirror or battery light source, and an attachment to use 110mm film to take pictures! It's in great condition and hasn't been out of the box in about 15 years. Looks like I've found my newest (and oldest) piece of brewing equipment. Whoever gave me that when I was a kid was a genius!

It's basically an old version of this kit...

Now all you need is a Hemacytometer and you can start doing cell counts, calculate accurate pitching rates, expanding your nerdism...

Add a gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer...

Then I can analyse my beer for diacetyl, DMS, acetaldehide...

If you get those toys let me know, I will move next door

(now if I can figure a way to get a blood gas or serum electrolyte analyzer to work somehow with beer....)
