What made the most difference in the hops utilization was the full boil. The late addition of the malt mostly is used for a lighter colored brew.
I've been doing the late addition for a while. That beersmith software should tell you about the hops utilization so you know how much hops you can leave out, I think some people have used 20% less. But if you are a hophead, a few more IBU's would not be a bad thing in a pale ale anyhoots!
