Default Using up the last of the extract

I have been collecting AG stuff over the winter and I have a quantity of LME left. I thought by using it I could also use some of the stuff I've collected for AG.

I wanted to use my brand spankin new Barley crusher, new digital scale, Brewsmith sofware and brew pot. In using the brew pot I was able to do a full-boil. The BC was used for crushing the steeping grains.

The best part of the day was however seeing what a HUGE difference it makes adding the LME at the end of the boil. That was the first time I had done that and could now kick myself for wasting all those hops in the past.

Notes

Pitched yeast dry (no starter) at 76deg F.

I've been reading an awful lot about late liquid addition on here lately. The color/clarity of my beer has never mattered as much as the taste, but I may try this in the near future as my brews seem to always include some LME.

What made the most difference in the hops utilization was the full boil. The late addition of the malt mostly is used for a lighter colored brew. I've been doing the late addition for a while. That beersmith software should tell you about the hops utilization so you know how much hops you can leave out, I think some people have used 20% less. But if you are a hophead, a few more IBU's would not be a bad thing in a pale ale anyhoots!

I love hops. This brew has great hop presence.

I used hops that I had in the freezer since late Oct. and scaled back the alpha based on the percentages given in BS. I suppose using totally fresh hops I could have scaled back the amounts.

It was a good exercise and I ended up with a better batch of beer using ingredients I had on hand.
