It's annoying that anyone who finds out that you make beer @ home thinks you're trying to replicate BMC stuff, and you're doing it because you're a cheap ass. Also, they think that because they tried it 10 years ago and it sucked, or because the "brew your own" place down the street experiment didn't quite work out that it's impossible to make good beer. And they usually follow up this advice with some comparison to making moonshine and you being some kind of bootlegger.

But the odd time you get someone who says something like "I used to know a guy who made his own beer, and he gave me one once that I'd say was the best beer I've ever tasted". Those guys are solid.

I love this thread. Never gets old.

One of my favorites, upon seeing my immersion chiller, "Wow, I see you do your own distilling too, now that it's legal."

No, I don't, and no, it isn't.

My dad when he tried my second partial mash beer, an American Red Ale.

"Wow, it's even got bubbles!"

Woman at work:

"So can you make some of that rice beer like the normal stuff?"

I'm actually pretty thankful, I talk about brewing enough that I've been able to find a couple of people that either brew (mostly just kits sadly) or people that like trying different craft brews.

Funny story, knew a guy who went to the trouble of making a still... and made soap. Not nefarious soap. Just soap.

I think he used beef tallow.

Yup. A still is completely legal up to 1 gallon, I think. Distilling is completely legal. You can distill water, essential oils from fruits and herbs, and I'm sure there are other legal uses, but alcohol is not one of them.

Lol... about the distiller comment...

I had some mason jars filled with pre-boiled water cooling in the fridge to use for yeast washing, a friend of mine saw them and said "Holy cow! You moved on to making moonshine!"

Funny thing is that he is a home-brewer too, a noob, but a home-brewer none-the-less.

had one of those the other night when I got to talking about homebrewing with some people from class after a test let out. Was nice to see someone who appreciates it.

Not a stupid comment at all, but one of my favorites: I sometimes keep the fermenters in a bathtub so the mess is contained if there's a blowoff. SWMBO's dad told her little niece that "Jon makes beer in his bathtub!" and her eyes got all wide because I think she was picturing a bathtub filled with beer. Pretty cute.
