this might be a broad question from a noob but what what would you say the typical life span for an average homebrew ale would be, in a bottle and then in a keg at room temp. also what effects this? temp, light?

also what could you do to lengthen the life of your brews?

none of mine stayed the keg long enough to say. But keeping your beer cool and away from light will lengthen the time they will taste good.

light skunks beer

also oxygen will lead to deterioration

Barley wine (beer) may take up to a year to even taste decent

I've got some that's 8 months old and is just now starting to taste OK.

Most beer that you will brew wont even begin to taste its best until it has aged for 2 or 3 months. So i'd say a year atleast without hesitation but none of mine seems to last that long so i don't worry about a beer "going bad"

When I've let them last so long, I've had batches last over a year. Now, those were moderately strong (OG~1.055-60), well hopped ales, or they were lagers of about the same strength. I also keep my beer cold, around 34-35F.
