Last weekend was the first time I used a hop spider. How am I supposed to use it with flameout hops?

I dumped in the flameout hops and stirred them inside the hop bag for a minute, then proceeded to cool the batch. After about 10 minutes of cooling I removed the hop bag and squeezed the heck out of it to get the wort out.

Is this method okay? Or should I leave the hop spider in the wort during the entire cooling phase?

I leave it in during cooling, you get more aroma that way but also more bitterness. If you have a program like beersmith you can account for this.

From my understanding the hops do not add much, if any, bitterness under around 170-180 degrees. They will only continue to add aroma....leave them in during the full cool down!
