I got a kit of the month club as a gift. This months kit is an "Aussie light ale". Seems kinda blah and I want to pep it up a bit. I may steep some Clementines in a 1/2 gallon of water and add it but was also curious what corn sugAr will contribute? Is it just to boost ABV?

The kit is :
3.15 Pilsen extract
1# light DME
8oz catapils/ 8oz crystal 10L steeped
.5 oz saaz at 60
1oz saaz at 2
Wyeast 1056

sugar is used mostly to dry belgians out. so people substitute out malt for the sugar because it's more fermentable

It basically makes your wort more fermentable without adding much flavor or color.

I have no don't any experiments on this, but on my recent brews I been adding the sugar (in syrup) once my primary fermentation dies down. I add the sugar syrup and give the carboy (or bucket) a little shake to get the yeast going again.
