Supposedly, this is the recipe for Doggie Claws. Does this sound right to you guys? Also, I am relatively new to brewing but would like to give this a shot so would it be possible to convert this recipe to extract? And for a 5 gallon batch I assume you would just cut everything in half?

OG 1.106 - FG 1.022
For a 10 gal batch use
55lb Gambrinus pale
5lb British Crystal (crisp 45L crystal)
boil for 4 hours.

Hops:
First Hops 6 oz Simcoe for 120 min
4.5oz Simcoe 60 min
30 min before end of boil add 1/4 gal Honey
10 minutes before the end of boil add 6oz Amarillo.

I use Wyeast 1728

After ferment dry hop with 6oz pellet hops (Simcoe and Amarillo - 6 oz total)

Is that right, 60 lbs of grain for ONE ten gallon batch? Oh wait. I guess it is! Wow. that is one GINOURMOUS beer. I don't have promash since I'm at work, but I'd have to guesstimate you'd have to use about 20 lbs of malt extract and maybe cut the hops in half for a 5 gallon batch.

I hope Brewtopia stumbles across this thread, he loves the Hair of the Dog and is more help than I am!

20 lbs of malt extract seems like a lot for a beer that only hits 10.5 ABV, don't you think?

This isn't a straight forward conversion. With that large of a grain bill, you stop sparging long before you would normally (1.040 or so). Alan uses the last runnings for his "low" gravity beers.

13 lbs. of DME would get you there.

Also, I highly recommend brewing a small beer with the yeast, then pitching the DC on the cake.

This is what I came up with from Beer Smith.

The grain has been reduced to reflect the proper OG. With 55 pounds of malt, a 240 minute boil and 1/4 gallon (3 pounds) of honey the OG was close to 1.200!!!


Style: American Barleywine
Batch Size: 7.00 gal
Boil Volume: 11.39 gal Boil Time: 240 min
Brewhouse Efficiency: 80.00 %


Ingredients Amount Item Type % or IBU

20.00 lb Pale Malt, Maris Otter
2.00 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 45L
3.50 oz Simcoe [12.00 %] (120 min)
2.50 oz Simcoe [12.00 %] (60 min)
3.50 oz Centennial [10.00 %] (10 min)
2.00 lb Honey (1.0 SRM)

Beer Profile Estimated Original Gravity: 1.104 SG
Estimated Final Gravity: 1.022 SG
Bitterness: 242.8 IBU
Estimated Alcohol by Volume: 10.78%
