I generally use yeast cakes with brews of the same style, and if I do use the cake, it is for a darker beer.


I've got my Belgian Red ready to move to secondary, and I've also got my next Belgian Tripel ingredients ready to brew with. I would like to pitch the Tripel on top of the Red yeast cake (it's a White Labs Trappist Ale yeast). Does there seem to be anything dramatically wrong with this???

I can't image that the small amount of beer left in the cake would impact the color of a Tripel.

It'll be fine. I put a tripple on top of a darker Biere de Garde a few months ago. Tripple looks and tastes great.

It does seem like it could darken it up a little, but it won't hurt your beer. If you're worried about it, spend a couple hours washing the yeast.
