A group of eight of us are going to Detroit to see a Tigers game this Saturday. We plan on getting to town early so we can have a few beers and maybe some dinner before the game. The guy who organized this is insistent upon going to Hockeytown, which I have no problem with. I've been there before and I like it. But I was hoping someone could let me know if there are any breweries around there that are worth visiting. We plan on parking the vehicle(s) and walking wherever we go so it'll have to be fairly close to the Comerica Park. Likewise too for anything else worth seeing even if it isn't brewing related.

So whatcha got?

Went this past Saturday. Owner of our company hired a charter bus to take us down and back and paid for tickets. Good time. Walked from Greektown Casino to Hockeytown Face. Nice place. Beer selection could have been better, but it was still a nice stop before the game.

I too wanted to check out a decent brewery down there, but didn't do any research before hand. I don't think there are any breweries that are "close' to Comerica, but there are some bars.

The walk up Woodward was interesting. Kind of a, "Not sure if in right neighborhood" feeling. But I'm form Up North, so I'd probably get that feeling in any part of the city.

I know the feeling. When I was in the navy, we would sometimes find ourselves in what felt like questionable neighborhoods in foreign countries. The best advice we got from some of the older guys was to act like you belong there. If you don't look or act like you have no idea where you are or what you are doing, you don't draw attention to yourself. Then you become part of the scenery and people leave you alone. So that's pretty much how I behaved when I've been to Detroit and other cities in the past.

Not to sure about breweries in Detroit but every time I'm there I make sure I stop in at Slows BBQ. A buddy of mine brought me there once and that was all I needed to keep going back. Best BBQ in Detroit IMO

Good call on Slows. I recall somebody else saying something about that a while ago. I may have to find it.

So I'm gathering that there isn't anything within walking distance, so maybe I can stop by somewhere before parking. Anyone ever been to Atwater? I've tried their beer at the winter beer festival and I liked it, but is the brewpub worth going? I'd like to go home from someplace with a new pint glasss for the collection so I'm looking for just about anything.

The Detroit Beer Co. is just a block or so south of Comerica Park. I think its on Broadway. Nice place. The beer is good but not mind blowing.

Slow's is awesome but it is nowhere near the park. You can catch a shuttle at Nemo's just a block or two away.

We stopped in at DBC yesterday. What a day to choose! They had their tenth anniversary yesterday. $2 beers and $1 pulled pork sliders. I guess there was live music but we weren't going to stay for that. Picked up some sports souvenirs, hats and shirts and whatnot, then went to the game. Not fantastic seats but a good view. First time ever in Comerica Park. Is there a bad view in the place? I would guess that there isn't.

All in all a good day. We left the game early because we were down 6-1. Should have stayed. Ended up winning in extra innings. It also would have been nice if we had a chance at clinching the playoff spot, but that wasnt possible at yesterday's game. Any which way, Detroit was very cool. At least where we were. Not too sure if I would want to venture very far away from there.
