Hmmm...it looks like some malt extract makers may use it interchangeably, such as Alexanders. Sometimes an extra light malt extract will be made from a pilsner malt, where a pale malt extract will be made from a pale ale malt. The taste of the malt extract will depend on the type of malt used to make the extract. The more info you can get on what types of malt were used to make the type of extract you select the better.
