Im attempting to build off the MoreBeer Columbus IPA. I wanted a variety of hops, more of an Amber color, and better head retention. This is my first attempt at creating my own recipe so any input would be helpful. I don't want the malt to take away from the hops but I do want a darker, medium body, IPA.

12# Pale 2 row
1# Crystal 120
1# Crystal 15
.5# Carapils
1 oz Columbus 60 min
2oz Columbus Whirlpool holding temp at 200 for 30 minutes
1 oz Calypso Whirlpool holding temp at 200 for 30 minutes
2 oz Columbus Whirlpool holding temp at 175 for 10 minutes
1 oz Calypso Whirlpool holding temp at 175 for 10 minutes
1 oz Calypso Dry Hop 3 days
1 oz Amarillo Dry Hop 3 days

It does. Just replace the extract with 12 pounds of pale malt.

200 seems high for whirlpooling, but I don't have much experience with that. Your recipe seems solid. I've never used a pound of 120 before, but that is certainly gonna darken things up and also add some flavors. I'd might try 1# carapils and 0.5# 120.

I agree with grathan's modifications.

You might also consider something like this to get the body you desire:

8lbs American 2-row
4-5lbs Maris Otter
.75lb Crystal 40 or 60
.75lb Crystal 120

I've used this basic formula for several darker/fuller AIPAs and been quite happy.

Enjoy your IPA day!
