Default Irish ale like Smithwick

I want to make an irish ale like smithwick. I'm not looking for a clone, but something in the ballpark. I can then play and make it what I want.

I hve read this, even made it, but it isn't what I'm looking for.

It is way to dark, and way to malty. Anyone know where there is some recipe that I can start with? BTW, I need an extract recipe.

Try (Adventures In Home Brewing). They have a few extract recipes that are similar to Smithwick.
