When you rehydrated the yeast, did it foam, or did it just sit like powder in water?

Ring of brown gunk sounds like krausen so it sounds like it fermented just fine. Do a hydrometer reading.

But don't worry. If you can determine that it *didn't* ferment you can always throw in more yeast *after* waiting a week and determining via gravity readings that fermentation didn't occur.

A good idea to sanitize your hydrometer if you're going to drop it in your beer.

Ok so I was going to order a thief online but lucked out finding a store in town that sells them! Took my first hydrometer reading yesterday and I think it went well. Other than the part where I lifted the thief out and like a tue noob touched the bottom and beer came gushing out all over the floor haha. The second try was much cleaner. I read the hydrometer as 1.018. I'll post a pic in a min so that you guys could take a look. Either way it looks like it fermented! Thanks so much for all you guys who helped ease my first timers nervousness. I look forward to returning the favor to a fellow noob down the road

First pic looked like 1.017 to me. The tube needs to be more level though,it's leaning a bit.
