Hello,
I'm a huge fan of strisselspalt and would like to grow it, but I can never find rhizomes. Is it because it's predominantly a foreign-grown hop? Does anyone know how I could go about procuring a couple rhizomes for next year? Does USDA give/sell to home growers?

I'll be moving to NE Pennsylvania this summer, so my main concern is whether it will grow well there. I plan on growing other varieties as well, but Strisselspalt is the one I can never find.

Thanks!

i have never seen Strisselspalt rhizomes for sale. it's not a protected (patented) variety so you would think it would be available, on the other hand 1) it's a european hop, which as a general rule don't do well in north america, and 2) it's not very disease resistant. the latter probably explains why no one grows it here, hence the lack of availability.

supposedly Hersbrucker is a good substitute, you might have better luck finding that.

I thought those might be the reasons. Darn shame. I love Strisselspalt, but they're not always available. Growing my own would have been an ideal solution. I don't have much experience with Hersbrucker, so I'll have to give it a go sometime.
