Is it a common practice to boil some DME and add it to fermenter to boost the beers ABV and body?..I know some people add sugar to boost ABV and keep the body light..How fermentable is DME as opposed to sugar? Can you still get very low FG using DME?

Yes. Not all DME is created equal either, so the answer to pretty much all your questions is that it depends on the specific DME used - some are very fermentable, others less so.
