Believe it or not, Uline.com sells them in packs of four for $4.55 each plus shipping (and they pack it really good too).

Yeah, glass is expensive to ship. That is where I got mine before I found them cheaper. But still not a terrible deal for someone not wanting to leave their house...lol

Check craigslist if it exists in your area. I always search for 'jug, gallon, wine, beer, homebrew'. They tend to go for $1-2 each in my area, if not free.

Ditto to the recycling center. My local sets the 1 gallon glass jugs and grolsh bottles aside and for their forethought they get 25c per bottle.

Like others I buy the cider jugs. Another source are vineyards that are a wedding venue. They serve lots of wine and not just their own. I have one I buy them at for $1 each. Some times they have an unusual shaped one that creates comments from visitors to my fermenting room.

I like to get the Organic Apple Juice at Whole Foods.. $8 bucks and you get a gallon of good cider. All you need to to is add honey/sugar etc., and yeast and BAM. I have made all my ciders/cysers that way and now have 10 1 gal fermenters!
