I figure I've at least broken even at this point. Just bought what I needed to make the job easier & quicker. My IPA with 6ozs of hops cost me 57c a bottle for 6 gallons producing some 64 bottles. I'd have to look up the exact figures, but that's pretty close. And that was AE. A PM batch would be about 10-12 bucks cheaper.

1) The price of the HME on their website is pretty much the same cost (or more) than buying beer at the grocery store

2) The Czech Pilsner I brewed came out way too sweet and I'm very disappointed... I didn't realize until I was almost done making the wort that I was out of sugar... Had to use pure cane sugar which was a big mistake

So I went back on the Mr. Beer website and was looking for solutions to my problems and I would like to use the pellet hops instead of the HME, the booster instead of sugar and just the brewers yeast that they have on the site to get my next brew to turn out right but I was wondering:

1) Are the pellet hops meant to be a substitute for the HME or are they just to add flavor

and

2) What are my options at this point. I would like to use the Mr. Beer kit but I would like for it to be cost effective. Is there a better route than HME?

Any experienced brewers out there who can help me get into my new hobby?
I did about 10 Mr Beer batches before I switched to extract. I would encourage you to make the Mr Beer kits as directed, except to leave it 3 weeks in the fermenter, and at least 3 weeks in the bottle.

Mr Beer kits are expensive. Extract brewing is cheaper. All grain is cheaper still. Buying beer at the grocery store is probably cheaper still.

IMHO, with Mr Beer kits you are paying a bit more for the simplicity of it. Many home brewers learn the process from Mr Beer and then "step up" to cheaper forms of brewing once they learn more about the process.

@GoCrew...how do you think the Crew is going to do this year?
