Partial Mash method and questions
So I have done one partial mash and there were several mistakes that I made. My efficiency was very low. After numerous hours of research and trial runs, this is what I have came up with.
Step 1 - Heat 12.5 qts of water on stove to 175F then pour water into 5 gal cooler (mash tun)
Step 2 - Allow cooler to heat up (appox 10 - 15 minutes) - this is done so that I do not have extensive heat loss - a problem I had in my first run
Step 3 - When water temp hits 168F add appox 10 lbs of grain in grain bag - stir to ensure all grains get wet (I will remember to tie off the bag this time)
Step 4 - Check temp every 15 - 20 minutes - heat sparge water to 180F
Step 5 - Conduct sparge - pour sparge water over grain
My key question...how much sparge water do I use? The posts/videos/etc. say a generic volume. I will be doing a full boil for a 5.5 gallon batch.
Do I sparge with enough water to reach my pre-boil volume?
Is 10 lbs of grain too much for this method. Should I drop down to 8 or 9 lbs?
