Is the residue of hops in the bottom of the wort needed for fermentation?
I was thinking of cooling the wort then transferring it to my mash tun to let it all settle then open the valve and drain off the wort, leaving most of the sediment behind.
Any reason why I should not do this, im thinking it might give me a clearer beer.
or am I totally wrong?

A little bit of trub (stuff on the bottom of the wort) is needed for fermentation. If you cool the wort down then whirlpool for a minute or two, you can siphon the wort off of the trub.

OK tried that thanks, I didnt quite get the same effect but I did get a lot less trub in the fermenter, thanks again.

Have you tried using a hopback, or bright tank system? If you have a freezer you could throw the wort into a bucket and chill to have all the trub drop out for an even clearer beer. A lot of breweries utilize that method. I usually just let the wort settle out for about and hour then rack into the primary

I left it for about 1/2 hour before racking it to the fermenter, looks pretty clear,next time ill try the refrigerator. Thanks again
