What is the right way to measure specific gravity of cider?

Before fermenting it is all mixed up, but I notice that as it sits and ferments more stuff settles out of the liquid and I figure all that apple crap that settles out would change the specific gravity in addition to any change caused by fermentation.

Any tips will be appreciated.

don't worry about the 'apple crap'. just measure the gravity before it ferments. if you put the hydrometer into pure sludge/sediment it will just sit in the sludge like a javelin in mud, but if you put it into liquid that has a bit of stuff in it you will get the right reading. if you are nervous about it, leave it in the fridge overnight, pour off the clear juice in the morning, let it warm to room temp, and measure that. you will get the same reading
