So what's the real deal plastic vs stainless steel?
I know the steel will hold up better and is easier to clean/ sanitize. Big difference in cost though. For home brewing what's your guys thoughts. I don't mind spending the cash on steel but is it really worth it? Looking to get 10 gal or better

IF I was looking to get a conical, it would be stainless or not at all.

I ferment in stainless pretty much exclusively these days. I've long since abandoned buckets and can't recall the last time I used a carboy.

I agree with Golddiggie. If I was going to upgrade it would be to a stainless conical or sanke.

LOVE fermenting in sanke kegs. SO much easier than buckets and such. Will be even easier (for me at least) very soon. If you're curious, PM me.

I'm curious about the Sanke as I've just come into a spare. How hard is it to get clean when done fermenting, and do you just use the normal hole size on that, or will it take welding a larger collar onto it?

Love fermenting in Sanke's!! Build yourself a cheap keg washer. Mine is just a bucket, a cheap pond pump, and a capped off sprinkler riser that I drilled holes in. I put the keg upside down over the bucket, turn on the pump, and walk away. Works great!! Another advantage to Sanke's is that you can sanitize them by boiling 2-3 gallons of water for 10 minutes. Nothing is going to survive that!! As far as fermenting I just treat it like a giant carboy...a #10 drilled stopper works great. You can either push the beer out with CO2 or a large auto siphon fits in it as well.

I like the idea of using a keg but a little confused. Are you still able to collect the trube and use it as a primary and secondary fermenter?

I don't secondary for 99%+ of my beers. I've also had zero negative impact from leaving a batch in primary for 3 months (or more). IME, unless you really NEED that yeast for another batch, right away, there's little need to dump it.

MOST of the smaller breweries around here use the big plastic conicals like the ones from U.S. Plastics.

If it's good enough for a brewery, it's good enough for a homebrewer.
