No I don't. But I also don't cook a great meal and then say "this meal would have cost me $150 at a restaurant". THAT's the point.

I'd much rather brew beer than go to work and make money to buy beer. And like others have mentioned, if you brew larger batches, labor is much less of an issue. If nothing else, look at it this way. Our labor at home is about 1/3 more profitable than earning money since we don't have to pay income tax on it.

I do NOT homebrew because it's cheaper than buying the beer....hell...Im not sure it is cheaper once you factor in the upfront costs, ingredients, costs of propane, running fermenter (cooling or heating), etc....not to mention my time.

I do it because I enjoy the process of homebrewing and the satisfaction of drinking a nice frothy beer that I made (almost) from scratch!

Sort of like fishing.....or hunting.....I do those for the act not for the "free" meat I get from it (which of course is not free neither...lol)

Brew on and drink up!

Oh NO!!!! I hope there arent any politicians reading this forum.....they may come up with anew tax on us homebrewers!

I started brewing because I thought it sounded awesome (and it is). I enjoy the process, the learning and obviously the final product. I brew a lot of stuff I can't find or is incredibly expensive to source. That is mostly true of my sour beers. DFW does not get a robust selection of sour beers and the only lambic to be found is the Timmermans/Chapeau/Lindemans stuff. I like the Lindemans gueuze but that's just one beer and it's around $10 per 750ml. I brew a lambic for extremely cheap and I like it better than the Lindemans gueuze. So that's a huge win/win for me. I brew on a fairly cheap system so between the low entry costs and ingredients, I definitely brew cheaper than I could buy. I don't drink more because I homebrew so if I had any other hobby I would drink the same amount of beer but pay more for it plus whatever the costs of the alternate hobby. If homebrew was more expensive than commercial beer I'd probably brew a little less but still do it.

Same reason I like to cook. I take pride in my "from the hip" ability to create yummy food and beer.

I love seeing wide eyes of adoration when someone says,"You made this?????"

There is some cost savings since I like pricey beer, and factoring in time when you would likely have done either nothing, or something else that costs money is ridiculous!

I could go to a bar and spend $30-$40 OR brew 5 gallons of something fantastic in about the same amount of time and have something much longer lasting to show for it.

They just got rid of the permit you needed in NJ. I don't think anyone had one anyway.

I don't know what's up in other states but up until recently you did in NJ. I don't think anyone had one though.
