Hey,in the bronze age they used a wooden trough in a hole in the ground covered with a hide or something. Found a couple on that one too. But some of those colonial brews sound more like "we NEED some buzz materials"!

The difference is if it came out kind of nasty they probably still drink it.
They probably also didn't worry about consistency from one batch to the next.

It's my opinion that they did worry about consistency,since the recipes were accuratly described for the usage of the day. Even cookbooks of the day were written in such a way that it was understood that you knew how to cook. They were just a list of ingredients. But they were far more concerned about a sanitary drinking source. The plagues of There homeland still burned into their wretched memories. They basically didn't trust our pristine water sources.
