Northern Brewer has several available. However, all of them have different start and end points. How do you choose 1?

Bill,

If you are just getting started brewing you would be fine getting Northern Brewers basic hydrometer here: http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/l...000-1-070.html

However, If you plan on getting involved in the hobby, which I am sure you will once you have brewed, you might be interested in brewing higher gravity beers which may require you to measure above 1070. This would require a hydrometer that would measure higher. In which case I would recommend you would get one similar to the following.
http://homebrewhq.com/ProductDetails...productID=1079

Hope this helps!

Good luck on your brewing adventure!

If you're super anal about accuracy, get one of the lab-grade one that goes to 1.070. Just know that if you brew any bigger beers, it will be worthless. If you want to get something that's fairly accurate and will cover most of your brewing needs without breaking the bank, then the 5 dollar beer/wine hydrometer is fine to start with.

Like many brewers, once you get into the hobby you'll probably end up buying a refractometer for doing your pre-fermentation measurements anyway.

You need one that measure "beer range". That is about 1.000 to 1.120 ish.

You don't need the "lab grade" versions.
