Default Huge sponsors column on the right of page

What's the deal with this big a$$ sponsors column on the right... its pretty damn annoying, it takes up WAY too much space. just thought i'd mention it and see whats goin on. Is it a mistake? I hope its not permanent.

I posted in the "ads on HBT" thread because they just showed up for me too and I have ads disabled. It's pretty annoying.

yeah, i have adblock running on my machine too. i saw the blip in connection just before this update.

have to say, hate it. bad design, bad layout. just plain ugly. I'll poke around at viewing the source later tonight and block the div.right-section. hopefully i can just stick a rule in adblock to get rid of it altogether.

Agreed, sucks a lot, viewing pane for the site is too reduced, makes me feel like becoming a member was pointless if I've still got ads displaying and annoying me.

Guys, go to your control panel, there is now a disable banner ads or something that's been added.

Eta, it's in your edit options and called Disable Sidebar

go to the user control panel. you can turn it off at the very bottom of your options.

mods: might be helpful to announce this info in a memo somewhere since the overwhelming majority of opinions is "hate it, this sucks"

I just disabled it. I have to say that if the side-panel banners are the new default, new-users are going to be harder to come by. I doubt I would have hung around here long enough to appreciate the traffic and user knowledge before being driven off to some other forum.

It's not too bad on my laptop (gigantic screen), but it makes browsing the site on my Kindle a nightmare. I can pinch to zoom there and somewhat negate it, but on my netbook I won't even be able to use the site anymore. Since I don't know how to demonstrate the problem from the kindle, here is a screen grab from my iPhone. I'm all for unobtrusive ads, but this is obnoxious.
