Did my first all grain yesterday. Yooper Pale was chosen. The pre-boil gravity wasn't even in the neighborhood. According to Beersmith it should have been 1.056...well I got 1.036. This was straight out of the boil pot after I stopped the sparge. Not sure if I needed to cool it first, not sure of what the temp was on it, but it was quite warm. Would the possibly make it read as whacy as it did?? I took a post boil gravity (after cooling the wort), and I got a reading of 1.050. Should I worry of RDWHAHB??

Your boiling water out there for your gravity rises..
What was your final boil volume?

Looks right to me if you boiled down from 7 gallons.. might be a mash effencey problem but it will come out just fine..

If you didn't cool the wort sample, your hydrometer reading will be off. If you were testing sparged wort, you could be looking at 160dg+, and I think hyrdrometers are calibrated for 60.

If that's the case, you pre-boil gravity was in the ballpark

[email protected][email protected] so your temperature would have been 100deg for the correction to be true at 1.036.. thats way under sparging temps.. something else must be wrong..
