Default oak chips in wine

Hey so i just crushed my grapes and began primary fermentation. I was wondering when exactly i add my oak chips. I assume it is not during primary fermentation. Do i just let it sit in the glass carboy from day one of the secondary fermentation? Also how many ounces of oak to a gallon do i add?

Id add a little at a time and taste every few weeks. There's no magic formula for oak, that's the art of wine making!
