For me, the plastic cup on the bottom of the racking cane is high enough to keep trub out, so I just set it on the bottom of the bucket. I put a 3/4" shim under the near side of the bucket to minimize the beer left in the bucket. I don't make any really high gravity beers - that would probably make more trub.

OR you could not worry about it. I put the first 236.5 mL (half pint) into a special container (pint glass) and drink it while Iím waiting for the siphon to finish.

Sure, Iím forced to drink a little trub and air, but I can take it. Thatís sort of why I do this. Iím in it for the beer.

Weirdboy, how do you start your siphon? I used an old turkey baster until mold got it. Iíve bought two different kinds since then, both too wimpy.

I take a shot of vodka and swish it around a bit, then use my mouth.

However, flyguy's t-siphon works fine, too, and is dirt cheap and easy to make.

I just fill the racking cane half full of Star San and let gravity and vacuum start the siphon. Just looked at Flyguys T-siphon though and that looks easy too.

Agree with others to start your racking 1/2 to 2/3 into the bucket. Slowly lower till you see sediment at the top of the racking can. Raise it up a little so it runs clear again. Easy. I've always moved my vessels right before racking, might have to start planning ahead a little more to allow it to resettle.
