depends on the beer... usually I prefer high gravity beers by themselves without food... some will go nice with food though.. an Imperial Stout can go well with a stew or a steak... a DIPA can go well with really spicy food. You need flavors that can stand up and copunterpoint or compliment the flavors of the beer. You don't want the beer to completely dominate. In that case might as well skip the food.
