You can, that is one method. Personally, I prefer to puree the fruit and screen out the pulp. Not always feasable. Then I prefer to just puree it and then mesh bag it. I like the ease of removal and high contact with the must. But some just squish their fruit and put the mead directly on it in the secondary. Use what method you are comfortable with:

Direcly in the secondary
Mesh Bag
Juice
Puree and mesh bag

What ever you are comfortable with. I like my method for the ease of clean up.

You could just dump those berries in; they'll end up on the bottom with the lees & will be pretty easy to flush out with a hose after you rack. The only drawback to this method is that you'll lose a little bit more product during racking. This is the method I use for fruit in secondary, it works for me.

Thanks for your thoughts. I ended up putting the strawberries and blueberries in a jumbo bag, put the tied bag into a 8 gal bucket and racked the mead onto it. Smells great!

The first pic is the fruit in the mesh bag and the second is the rack.
