Default 5 Gallon Carboys

Are these big enough for 5 gallon fermenting batches?

You'll end up blowing out of the airlock on every batch. You'll want at least a 6 gallon carboy or a 6.5 gallon bucket for a 5 gallon batch. Even then there is still a risk of the krausen blowing out through the airlock. (Look up blow off tube).

That's what I figured, thanks for confirming!

Unless you want to brew smaller batches. 3-4 gallons seem to do alright in my 5g carboy as long as it is not a high gravity brew. I do the same with 1 gallon test batches in 2 gallon glass jugs. But most people feel that if your going to go through the effort then you should do 5g. Either way its fun and you get beer out of it.
