The simple way to check if the lid on your bucket is tight is to press lightly (one finger) on the lid while you watch the water in the bubbler. If it moves, you're sealed.

let it ride until you see no visible activity, then check you sg. no need to open the primary up more than you need to.

I've made starters with dry yeast.... but I thought I had come to understand that this was unneccessary due to the really high number of yeast in a dry package anyway?
