Default Malto Dextrin vs. Lactose

I have a recipe that calls for 8oz of Malto Dextrin and 4 oz of Lactose. Aren't these about the same?

I shy away from Lactose because of lactose intolerance which I have come in contact with when sharing.

So if I dropped the lactose could I add Malto Dextrin? What's the difference ??

No, they are not the same. Lactose is milk sugar- unfermentable by ale yeast. That will provide sweetness. Malto-dextine is different- it's more like a thickener to provide body. A grain that would give similar results is carapils (otherwise known as dextrine malt).

hmmmmmmm - and since most extracts contain carapils . . . . . . it might be good to slack off a little on the Malto-dextine a tad.

In my latest sweet stout batch, I subbed half the lactose for malto-dextrine and was not pleased with the result, fwiw.
