Small beers start with an OG under 1.040 (although a German Schankbier is 1.028-1.032). When made from third runnings, they can be 1.020. It's what people drank with meals when the water wasn't safe. Most bulk lagers are small beers in the 3.2-3.6 ABW range.

Runnings is the wort coming off your mash when you sparge. The initial runnings have the highest concentration of sugar and as you continue sparging whether fly or batch the later runnings will have less sugar in them. As mentioned earlier brewers would use this to their advantage and collect enough high sugar runnings to make a "big" beer and the later runnings would be used to make a "small" beer.

In batch sparging, it's the number of times you drain the Lauter tun. "running water through the grain" so to speak...

I've seen this remark quite a bit: "Life begins at 65, 1.065"
Once you get above this gravity, the maturation time increases.
Paulander Doppelbock has a ABV of around 7.50, which suggests an OG of around 1.070 +. The beer is lagered for 9 months before it is sold.
Big beer.
