My wife complains that some of the beers I brew have an "earwax" aftertaste that is present in other beers, but not to the same extent. I have brewed a PM IPA, a PM stout, and a PM pilsner. Anyone have any insight into this? My thought is that it could be the hops.

I have no idea what earwax tastes like, but I'm guessing she is experiencing a foul odor with an "oily" feeling... sounds like diacetyl, which is likely a fermenting issue.

Seriously though.
Do you filter your water?
The variation in aftertaste could be because of the different styles.
Pilsners usually are brewed with a softer water profile whereas stouts are brewed with a higher mineral content.

Some brewers are fortunate to have good tap water for brewing while others have to filter and or make adjustments.

If you are not using a charcoal filter you may want to consider it.

Since I've started filtering my water my beers have a much cleaner taste.

Tell her to keep her tongue out of your ear between sips off her beer.
That taste should go away then.

:D
