The Sierra Nevada clone on pg. 32 all grain version:

"Heat 3.42 gallons (13 L) of water to 161 degrees, stir in crushed grains and mash at 154 degrees. Mash for 60 minutes then stir in boiled water to raise grain bed temperature to 168 degrees."

How much boiled water to stir in? Very vague directions

As much as you need to raise the temp....your system may be different than others. You may have pre heated you mash tun....any number of factors come into play.

Bring a couple gallons to a boil, add a couple cups, or a quart at a time slowly while you stir. When you hit the temp, you're golden.

Does it matter what type of sparge (ex. batch) to do when using the recipes out of this magazine?

Sounds like Mash-out.

Unnecessary for batch sparging.

I thought the recipe was calling for a step mash. But I think you're right.
